In 2014 I bought a 383 sbc from Smeding Performance. Very satisfied with the product; no problems. Having said that, they were slower than promised. During the build they said they were having problems getting some parts (pistons as I remember). Just my one time experience.

Not cool for a cruiser. You can get to a low 12's car with a 350 right at 6000 to 6500 rpm at the lights. You can get low 12's car with a 383 right at 5500 to 6000. You can get a low 12's second car with a 406 right at 5000 to 5500. If you do your homework you can take all three of those combos into the high 11's.Now that you said that, I would go with a gen 1 sbc. I am all about the ls engines. They are quiet smooth and dont seem that radical, Compared to a gen 1 sbc at the same horsepower rating. I would do a stroker gen 1 sbc based off a dart shp block. $1200 with all the maching done ready to assemble. 3.85 stroke crank with a 6" rod.My car is currently set up for a sbc.
