You will need a non-computer controlled transmission (1987 to 1991) or a aftermarket trans controller, TCI makes one. May 1, 2016 · Replace the TBI with a carb and try it before ditching the electronics. Leave everything plugged in the harness to satisfy the computer. Mount a TPS to the carb, a fuel pressure regulator and give it a try. Not much different from installing a propane mixer on a TBI engine and they run fine. The distributor will need to be switched to a non-computer control HEI when you switch to a carburetor. Not all HD engines have the quadrajet to TBI adapter plate. My personal opinion, the TBI system just needs to pump more fuel/air into a performance 454. The quadrajet and HEI are the least expensive, provided good used parts are available. When the adapter plate for the 2-barrel TBI unit is placed over the stock carburetor flange, the bolt pattern may be the same, but the placement of the throttle bores is in the center of the flange, creating an obviously unusable restriction.
